Having the chains was more of a precautionary measure. The highway patrol can cite you for not carrying chains in those conditions. As far as voiding the warranty, I'd be curious to know if in fact that is true and why.
The manual says not to use tire chains because of lack of clearance, but you can use other types of traction devices that are SAE class S on the front tires only. And says that damage caused by using any traction device is not covered under warranty.
