A few of the biggest reasons the VIN is needed:

Subaru parts breakdown & illustrations are terrible (the oil supply line for the turbo that goes up to the osv is on at least 4 pages from start to finish, several in totally diff engine subsections)

There are too many diff midyear design changes, p/n's superseded or w/ attached bulletins, trim levels & factory options that completely change seemingly unrelated components on the car

And typically parts are looked up by R.O #, Cust # (if you've been to the dealer before), or VIN, the info available to the parts guy by year, make, model is slim to none. Its all based on how subaru catalogs their info

Simply put, if you're calling a subaru parts dept. just have your VIN handy
