+1 for snow tires being cheap insurance. I have snow tires mounted on my stock wheels for the Winter and for the $378 shipped I paid, it was definitely worth it. People think their SUVs with all-season tires are good in the snow, they should try getting around in a Subaru with dedicated snow tires; the thing can get anywhere. The only thing that would stop me is ground clearance since I'm lowered with a front lip.
