In the end it would essentially be the same for either block if you go with the same size sleeves, same crank and same rods.
The only Advantage here is the 2.2L has a fully closed deck with oil squirters (not sure if machining for sleeves eliminates the squirters though). If it does.... I would go with the 2.5L block but send it to Outfront motorsports to be fully closed after the sleeves are installed. The only disadvantage of the 2.2L is that it only uses 4 bellhousing bolts vs 8 on the 2.5L block.
So OP, it really comes down to what would be more cost effective if the 2.2L can retain the squirters after machining!
