Well, it wasn't pretty and it was only by 1/2 a point but Max Biaggi and Aprilia won another world super bike title today. Congrats to the Noale based brand. They also won the manufacturer's Title. That makes 50 WORLD championships.
"The title is Biaggi's second in the World Superbike Championship, the Italian winning five times on the season with six other podium finishes. He also won four 250cc World Championships prior to moving to MotoGP and ultimately the World Superbike Championship.
Sykes, meanwhile, won four times during the 2012 season with nine other podium finishes. His first win of the season at Monza was the costly one as it paid only half points as it didn't run full distance. If that race had paid full points, Sykes would have won the title."
The last race was held in France on a soaked track that just wouldn't dry out…MANY riders fell. All Max had to do was show up and roll around in 10th both races and it was his. Well, Italians are drama queens and he crashed out of the 1st race. He finished 5th in race two to secure the championship.
World Superbike has a two 45 minute heat format each round. Best overall out of the two races wins. There was a round earlier in the year (Germany) in which Max picked up his crashed bike and got back out on the track to collect points. It paid off at the end.
Championships are won by doing great on your good days but mostly by limiting damage on your bad days.
