You made the right decision. Both the Hankook winter i pike and the general Altimax take really well to a little higher air pressure. I've run 40 psi or so in my 205/50R16 winter i pike tires and it handles decently for a winter tire.

Some people tend to think a narrower tire is better to go through snow, I would rather have a little wider tire and have been traction in some snow, compact snow and then have the benefit of a little better stability on bare roads Just experiment with the air pressure some to see how you like the response in both snowy and bare conditions.
