I think the sport/crosstrek are pretty similar. From what I remember the crosstrek is essentially an impreza with a 3" lift and wheels that are either hit or miss depending on whom you ask. I would just test drive both.
They also both have the 2.0i motor, so I doubt you'd be gaining or sacrificing power by going with either one. I would venture to guess that the Crosstrek is just an impreza with beefed up components (like when they offered the OBS) and of course the increased ground clearance to handle more offroad scenarios. If that's what you're into, then great.
