Default 2004 STi Wheel Bearing Issues

To keep it short, I'm buying a track car. A 2004 STi has come up. I have a couple of questions.

1) Can anyone elaborate on how bad the wheel bearing issue actually is? Some people say they replace the bearings more than their oil. And brake pad knockback issues are terrible from my understanding as well. The car will only be driven to, from and on the track for AutoX and some HPDE.

2) Is the rear wheel biased drivetrain preferred for track use over the 05+ more even split in power distribution?

I've searched and found the 6gun racing threads, but it seems they're out of business. Is there another way of getting a kit for better bearings?

Additionally, 5x114 conversions seem expensive. Is it expensive enough that I should just buy a 2005+?
