Go with what you are comfy and accurate with. I met a vet recently that preferred using irons over his issued optic because that's what he grew up shooting with...was just more comfortable/accurate. My guess is that he had so much muscle memory (esp in the eyes) related to using irons that it made getting used to a magnified optic very difficult for him.
Something else to consider, Flatfoot--they make sights that are basically just the rear-sight portion of the carry handle setup, leaving room for an optic in front of it. You could could do this and run it cowitnessed with an optic such as an Aimpoint.
