Hahaha! Yep. Seriously. Mine was about 100$, but, other than the camera/lenses/filters/tripod, it is the single most used piece of equipment I own. I would spend 100$ on it again if it broke. I have strobes, but I never use them. Even bought the triggers and special hot shoe adapter to make it all work (F Sony sometimes
) but they just hang out on a shelf at home collecting dust.
And yes, if you paint well, light painting will give you very even results.
But, if you don't want to spend 100$ on a flashlight, that is up to you. There are always ways around it depending on how you use it. Set your WB for the type of light output, if your light source is dimmer, paint longer. Up to you. I love night photography and do it every chance I get so having good tools for it is worth something to me.
