my .02 depends on what kind of work you do, from Dom's stand point he interacts with people all day long it's part of his lifestyle so someone approaching him in person may seem like the right/professional thing to do. In other cases like a office setting where there is less interaction with people besides co-workers a e-mail or another form of electronic communication could be seen as a more acceptable approach.

I've had the same job for over six years now so the correct thing to do these days when applying for a position could have changed since then but I believe in making a appearance in person to sell why I should be hired over someone else. But hey I'm just a dumb flight engineer in the Army who picks his nose all day, flies over your houses way to low at night and shoots a mini gun so no professional talents required!
