sounds to me like water pump is a likely suspect. Not much else that isn't on top that would get the timing cover wet.

If it is, the good news is that it sounds like if you did what you say you did, there's probably no damage to anything else and while it's not a cheap fix to have a shop replace the water pump, it's not a REALLY expensive fix like it would have been if you had run dry for a while before noticing the temp rising.
