I go one step further with the "survival kit" and bring along some camping cookware and a butane stove, and some packets of oatmeal and hot cocoa. Best case scenario, you can have a warm meal and cocoa for less than the $22 you'd pay at the lodge. Worst case, you can melt snow/boil water, and have some warm food to get through the night.

I also bring along an ATV whip flag in the event that I get stranded when it's dumping snow. If need be, I'll zip tie it to my roof rack or antenna so I don't get mowed over by a plow.

As far as the car, get some good deicer spray (prestone), fill your washer reservoir with good deicer/windshield wash, and remember to lift your wiper blades and keep your parking brake off.
