It's just the wording that has people confused about the cam timing differences. The bottom line is that the STi AVCS cam/sprocket will have less advance at resting state compared to the WRX cam/sprocket. The reason they do this on the STi is so you don't get piston to valve contact when you advance the intake cam timing. But because you can advance the intake cam timing you can restore the lost compression.
