Have you removed the timing cover?
If it doesn't smell like coolant or oil and the smoke is the area of the crank pulley, there maybe be something going on under that timing cover.
If I were you I would be very interested to see what's going on under the timing cover. I'd think it would be making a lot more noise or not starting if the belt was broken, but I've never actually seen a completely broken timing belt. I did have a belt skip teeth before and it made an awful racket. I may just be the belt rubbing on something in there.
