I read than your post that there's no oil leak. If it's smoking it could be a number of things coolant steam, oil on the exhaust parts or possible axle grease, front a torn cv boot, that's been slung against the exhaust parts.

On different occasions, I have experienced axle grease from a torn CV boot and a tiny 'wicking' oil leak from my valve cover gaskets causing the embarrassing "smoke through the scoop" condition.
I'm just curious...but when has a torn CV boot caused a car to shut off?
