Default 97 gc8 with cat coverter problems

Hi there, I have a 97 V.3 Sti with the cat sensor light thats been turning on and off for the past few weeks, was not really causing any noticible issues so I assumed it was a sensor, until yesterday after driving for an hour or so on the highway I stopped at a light in the city and when I was pulling off the clutch in (giving the usual amount of gas) the car stuttered and the engine bogged down- check engine light turned on and the car was gutless, I drove it very easily for 5 minutes and the check engine light turned off.. but the cat is obviously clogged so I'm wanting to either replace it with a hi flow cat or I had been suggested by someone to use just a catless straightpipe..

now what I'm wondering is will I be okay just swapping to a catless with no tune? I'm super strapped for cash and I've already droped over 4 grand into this car only having it 4 months (engine spun a bearing 2 weeks in)...
