It's helpful to learn to match revs for easier engagement.

Also you have the option to use a heavy shift knob (stainless steel) to add some weight to throws. This provides a smoother feel and seemingly lighter effort.

Like others said, bushings help a lot. They don't make it less notchy, but you do gain a lot of precision and actually feel exactly what's happening.
