You keep repeating this as if it were true, you need a new mantra.
I can't recall any of the Auto magazine reviews (or Consumer Reports) complaining that Subaru engineered the Impreza with the CVT purely to excell in the epa test and not perform well in reality.
The redesigned Impreza pretty much got rave reviews from all of them in their driving tests.
The only caveat is that some of the reviewers stated that they would buy a 5 speed over the CVT, but that was because of the lower power from the redesigned engine - so they can wring more power out of it. Keep in mind that people that review cars for a living generally tend to be car enthusiasts who want the control the car, and generally prefer shifting themselves most of the time.
Read some of the reviews of the Subaru and other cars, you will get the true picture.
