Ranges say its because of ricochets and the potential for it to spark a fire. I think it's more to cut down on the number of black guns out there since shooting OTM is way more expensive. Those rounds are usually heavier which means they are slower and FAR less likely to damage steel targets. Light FMJ rounds will pierce 1/2 non hardened steel at 300 yds easily. Hardened steel isn't cheap. Having some bozo out there with super hot ammo is an easy way to ruin it.
That said there are still some folks with precision ARs that I see out there quite often. I always thought the range fee of $20 and the distance from the metroplex would keep some traffic down but it still got pretty busy some days.
So what am I going to do with the case of FMJ .308 I got for the pea-shooter? Wait until March and then blow it all through the can at Gibson's?
