I know Saab has been out of business. And you're right it may be an impreza wrx with some cosmetic mods but it doesn't mean anything because the badge on the car says Saab. You said you were going to write subaru a letter but I'm letting you know they aren't going to even care about a Saab owner. Not trying to be a d ick but that is just how business works. We've had Saab owners try to get us to do the control arm recall. They weren't happy when we broke it down to them and told them they don't own a subaru. Not sure what the hard part is to understand about that. I don't write nissan a letter when one of their switches goes bad in a subaru even though the part says nissan. I don't think you're ever going to understand that because you have Saab 9-2= wrx.
That type of code isn't generally a common issue neither is the wear of the plastic gear. Sure it can happen but not common. I can only imagine that kind of wear coming more from not changing the diff fluid. Probably gets dirty and has contaminants grinding between the gear and the pattern between the 3-4 cluster.
Another thing to add, you have a 2005. You are extremely far from any type of warranty. When something goes bad on a car and someone has to put out a lot of money they want to put someone to blame. In reality you're dealing with an older car and things go bad on cars that you have to pay to replace. No car can go it's life without replacing bad or worn parts.
