Reliability data is that of vehicles that have been DRIVEN, i.e. (ab)used by their drivers. mrkyle3 nailed it. And there IS a statistically significant difference on how an average WRX/STi owner drives his car vs. how a 2.5i owner drives his. You could probably nail it down to how often an average 2.5i sees the >5000 rpm range as opposed to a WRX.

Let's keep in mind that especially since 2008, the 2.5i became just another compact, geared at a market which never ever visits an automotive forum (how many N/A owners are on here and rs25 vs the total amount of n/a owners in the country?), doesn't know what RE92s are, and thinks a tachometer makes the car "sporty". Just because of grandma driving, reduced wear&tear accounts for a good chunk of increased reliability...
