As to touch up paint, seems other manufacturers are the same. With Nissan 'silver' or 'black' can be different shades of that color all within the same model year.
Same with interior colors. Three shades of grey on some of our vehicles-4 if you think 'charcoal' is 'dark grey'. So you tell me it is dark grey and I am still guessing if what you call dark grey is what it really is, or alternately is your version of black is truly black or is it charcoal, etc. The VIN tells us what your color code is.
Same with if your vehicle is California or Federal emissions. 99% of vehicle owners have no clue and simpy assume it is federal because they are not in California (or vise versa).
You would also be surprised how many people dont even know what year their vehicle is. They will say its an 2008 and it is actually 2007. So 'silver' is different between those two years and now there is a problem when they come back after trying to put that touch up paint on their car.
If you dont want to give a parts dept your VIN you are paranoid. Based on what others have said on here Nissan is the same, we dont store your VIN.
We find it very amusing people calling from other states to order parts over the phone, who will give us their name, address, phone number, credit card number, card holder name as printed, expiration date and CVS code on the back of the card but feel 'uncomfortable' giving us their VIN.
