They're not "throwing it away," it's just going to apply to only the sedan. Its past competitors were mostly sedans anyway, with the C63 only having offered a coupe for the past year or two while having been a sedan throughout most of its lifespan and also when the C36, C43 and C55 were out. Same thing with the IS-F.

Don't get me wrong, I acknowledge that the M3 was typically renowned for its coupes (as it has always been available as a coupe), but it's not like people who want two-door sports car (where the M3 had few direct competitors, unlike its sedan counterpart) will suddenly not figure out that the M4 is the coupe.
