I'm really thinking about one of these in my 99' Forester I picked up with a spun bearing. I have an importer local to me with these for $1000. That is way cheaper and easier to find than a 2.5. Also with 4.44 gears and a 5-speed, I bet it wouldn't be too sluggish down low.

Any more info or impressions would be cool!
There is absolutely no difference in the long block. In fact the intake manifolds are from the same castings. The real difference is the 2.5l manifold has the MAP/ IAT in the plenum while the 2.0l has the MAP in the TB and the IAT is in the air box.
These motors are going for a bit less then that up here...

Is the compression ratio at 10:1 like the 251/3 as well? Time for interweb search... I do find the 10 less HP figured slightly weird, how can you drop 20% displacement and lose only 10 hp...?

From Wikipedia:
Specifications
Displacement: 1,994 cc
Bore: 92.0 mm
Stroke: 75.0 mm
EJ20E SOHC naturally aspirated
Legacy JDM
1989-1994 125 PS (92 kW) BC - BF series
1993-1999 135 PS (99 kW) BD - BG series( ECU code EURO 3G,D3 ; Asia 4H)
1998-2004 155 PS (114 kW) BE - BH series( ECU code EURO 3G,D3 ; Asia 4H)
2003-2009 140 PS (103 kW) BL - BP series

This motor was built in 01.

And why do you find it so hard to believe the hp number? How does a jdm 2.0l STi make more power then the usdm 2.5?

Also there was a DOHC naturally aspirated 2.0l that you could get in a JDM legacy that was making 190hp back in 2003. And now 10 years later the BRZ has the same numbers.

It's clear that this motor does not produce the same tq figures but I can say that it's not that bad. I am still shocked on how smooth this motor is compared to the 2.5l
