+1 its the spring that applies tension to the oil seal, they get knocked out pretty easy if the drive shafts are pulled out at an angle, or put in at an angle for that matter. If the seals are in good shape you can just reseat the spring into its groove, when it comes to oil seals, rule of thumb in most every case is spring side is towards the oil FWIW.
