pretty sure it wont necessarily ruin the engine and it can be done, but ive always been assured not to do it fast or often as tooth skipping can occur. i wouldnt recommend it. i think it has to do with the direction the engine was designed to turn vs the slack in the belt turning the wrong direction could create in turn possibly skipping teeth. hence why there are belt guides to try to prevent this.
