I noticed everyone was saying the 2008+ Impreza non-navi headunit had a terrible output/sound processor and that an aftermarket one would be the first thing on the shopping list.
However, I have the OEM Navigation headunit and I couldn't find much information regarding the output/sound processor on it.
Would an after-market sound processor be the first thing on my list for improved sound quality?
Currently running the stock OEM door speakers for those who are wondering.
Which Nav unit do you have? There are 2 different ones. 08-11 has the Kenwood DVD based Nav, and 12+ has Fujitsu Ten Nav. I just recently replace the standard OEM HU in my 13 WRX with a Fujitsu Ten unit and there was major sound improvement. However I do notice it still not very good. I also just replace my front speakers with a pair of Infinity Kappa 63.9i and that did give me a bit more bass but still has weird distorted bass with some song. a Digital Sound Processor will definitely improve your sound. I'm planning to put a JBL MS-A1004 in my car in a couple months. It's an amplifier with built in DSP.
