I've got over 100k miles on my 02 with 31's but I baby it. That's the max you want to go if you have the Dana 35 rear axle and don't off road. There has always been an option for a Dana 44 rear end on the TJ's which runs safe even offroad up to 35's, but it's rare to find one with it. The front Dana 30 is safe up to 35's for the most part.

Even if the guy didn't off road it, the reputation of the Dana 35 is that you can easily break it with 31s if you gun it on a wet road.
