I drove ours (bro and I bought it in June 2012, sold it in Sept.) on an 800 kilometer round trip from Vancouver to Lake Skaha. Winding mountain roads and crazy crosswinds are not the Smart car's strong suit.
It was the WORST experience I've ever had. It could barely make it up any minor grades at altitude, nor could it handle crosswinds that most cars shrugged off. I was sent crab-walking into the oncoming lane a few times thanks to the stupid winds and the side profile of the car along with it's light weight.
The worst part though, was that the AC was broken. Riding with the windows and top down nerfed the crosswinds a bit, but combined with no radio, it was just...ugh. Even with sunscreen, I was sunburned well before we even got to the campsite, and we were staying there for a week *just* for the sun.
Anyway, it's not a bad car for city jaunts and inner town stuff, I actually loved darting around in it, and I made it from halfway up Landsdowne in Coquitlam to my house in Maple Ridge in 12 minutes at 3am in that thing - it's got some pep at sea level. But if you do any sort of driving outside of the city, it's just not a good car to own. I had driven quite a few of them when I worked for VW, but never had any long-term tests, this really put it in perspective for me.
