They won't give you a maintenance schedule for the water pump. Generally, the water pump is replaced whenever you do the timing belt, since it takes a lot of disassembly (in most engines) in order to change the timing belt, and the cost of installing a new water pump is not that much in addition to the other work.

If you don't replace it, and the water pump were to fail, the labor cost to disassemble the engine to replace it is more than the cost of the pump, which is why most mechanics recommend replacing both (you get two new parts for the cost of 1 labor).

Also, of course, a failed or failing water pump can overheat the engine, causing total engine failure.
