One question I have for anyone knowledgeable about diesels: I understand the MPG improvement and being able to run on lower octane diesel being overall better for the environment, but a lot of diesels I see on the road spew black smoke out the tailpipe when they give it the beans. What gives with that and is it really something toxic? Regardless, I want one.
The black smoke is caused by soot and unburned fuel. Very detrimental to air quality. Also, diesel emissions contain a very high amount of nitrogen oxides, leading to acid rain. The only "clean" diesels out there employ exhaust regen/particulate filter systems and d.e.f. systems to reduce the oxides of nitrogen. Otherwise, unless you are burning vegetable oil, most diesels out there are far from "green."
