Why should that make any difference? Maybe some people just prefer the 5 speed. Just because the car isn't very powerful doesn't mean that people wouldn't want to shift themselves.

When I was in high school my dad had an 87 Civic wagon with the 5 speed stick. Gutless and slow but I loved driving that car because the manual transmission made it fun. My car at the time was a 65 Ford Fairlane with the 289 V8 and a 3 speed automatic. Tons of power but the Civic was more fun to drive.
