That same motor design with two squirrel cages would change your views...lol...Imagine the same flat torque but add about 200ft lbs and another 200whp. BMW wanted to maintain that power curve you mention but add the turbo option for more power. They did a good job. Now their early introductions to their direct injection systems that is another story!
I love those Zs but a few kids later you find there just isn't enough doors on them... or seats for that matter.

I could see the motor being bullet proof. It feels very under stressed and even though it is running well, it revs so much more slowly than the WRX. It reminds me a lot of the Datsun 280ZX inline 6 I used to have. More power overall than that 280 but the same characteristics of a grand touring car….smooth, loads of torque under the curve and not in a hurry to get there.
Pretty spoiled by living with the Subaru the last decade +.
