I like it. Ingenious. Only problem is that it is a fair weather intake, while it may perform having to diddle with it everytime it rains would be a major pain. But that is just me. Hmmm...what about putting a cover on the filter with the opening to the back? Kind of a fiberglass dome but with a big opening towards the back. Obviously you would have to do get creative to have clearence for the bolts. It should behave the same (since I really don't think there is much "ram air" effect going on) and keep out the crap. Just a thought. BTW concerning the cardboard covers, go and get some fiberglass resin, mix it up, and brush it on the cardboard. The cardboard with soak some of it up but with succesive coats the fiberglass will essentially form a "hard candy shell". I've done the fiberglass on cardboard thing a number of time and it works well. Plus you can smooth it would with judicous sanding and a little body filler. Then you can paint it for that "factory" look.
