the update was a service bulletin/recall -- when your car is included in the affected group they mail you a notice that explains what the problem is and what you need to do (call the dealer and schedule a free service).

Your car probably already had the corrected update done when built (my car also had a faulty or potentially faulty brake master cylinder, that was replaced prior to my picking it up, but that was only affecting the pre-ordered 2012 impreza's I think, they fixed the problem for cars manufactured after mine).

K&N they might frown upon, since it uses oil and when the oil is misapplied it can foul the mass airflow sensor. I make sure not to over-oil my Perrin.
