You sound like me. I was exactly where you are, except it was my new Tahoe, and would pop into 4wd by itself. Usually when you started it, it would switch into either 4 hi or 4 lo. I forgot what the part was called, but its on the t case and reads what gear it's in. Guess they had issues with that. Had it fixed and no issues since. We havnt had any issues with the Subarus yet. So is imagine you'll see the same after yours is fixed. Good luck.
Edit: part was the 4wd encoder motor.
