I think the sound is matching the speed of the car... Say, when i'm speeding up going down a hill, and i'm not gasing it, i can faintly hear the whine going up in pitch... and pitch goes down when i'm slowing down(letting off on the gas)... but like i said, it's pretty faint and it usually overshadowed by engine throttle or anything else....

If it is the differential, i'm confused as to why it's making a noise when the car is at a standstill... does the differential still move when the car is idling? From the sounds of it, the wheel bearing doesn't move when the car is standing still right? which means there's no way i can possible make a noise...
