If the 'smoke'(vapor) is white and may smell a bit like marsmallows/sweet it is coolant. It may be slowing down with heat due to a better seal as the the engine expands - or maybe just reduced. This soob engine is gaining a reputation for bad gaskets - don't let the dealership tell you otherwise. It's POSSIBLE (not guaranteed) that the dealership could talk the zone rep into some help with expenses - play up the poor college student angle, search these forums and the ones at www.usmb.net for reports of blown gaskets - print them out and take them with you - see if the service manager can get Subaru to split the cost with you or something. good luck
