I did surgery on Saturday. Just get under the car with a 10mm and 9mm sockets and closed wrenches to unscrew everything. Then use a locking wrench to bend the lips on the edges of the heat shields to a 90° angle. Lastly, use a narrow pry bar to wedge apart the upper and lower portions of the heat shield. It's a pain in the ass to get started but once it starts splitting it takes about 2 minutes to pry off.
Make sure to jack the car up and use jackstands. Also, you'll be applying a lot of torque to the pipes to pry off the shields so be careful...don't want to bend anything. But yeah, I was sick of the rattles so I just yanked them off.
