Yes it could still be the battery and no they are not all maintenance-free.

Have you put 91k on the original battery without ever checking the electrolyte level? Check the level (wear goggles) and top up with distilled water if needed. If it's still bad ask a garage to test it. You could also try a battery warmer but it might not help much.
