Hi all
The short version of my question is: what are the differences between the early (90-94) and the later (95-up) 2.2 NA motors? Are the internals of either a better choice for handling moderate boost? Are the long blocks interchangeable (could I put a 94 engine in a 96 car, and vice versa, without any major issues)?
The longer version (for those killing time at work)… I have a 96 impreza L(2.2 L) that runs great. I want to turbo the car sometime in the near future. Also, I just acquired a 94 legacy wagon (2.2L) with a bad rod bearing. The goal is to turbo the impreza and fix the leggy wagon and keep it NA as a daily driver. If there are no major compatibility issues between the longblocks, I’ll pull the running 2.2 out of the impreza and stick it right in the wagon. Then I’ll build the broken 2.2 from the wagon, or get another motor all together to put in the impreza with a turbo kit. But, if swapping the motors between the 94 and 96 is a bad idea, I’ll have to come up with another plan..
I’m no noob, this just isn’t an easy topic to search for…
Thanks for your help, and sorry for the long post,
Jim
