Subaru engineers recomend 3,000 miles and NOT before 1,000 miles. There is probably special lubracants put on critical parts like camshaft lobs and lifters that should remain in the engine during the critical breakin period. I do an easy breakin intersperced with very brief periods of heavy throttle in the upper gears only (5-10 seconds up to 3500 rpm). I changed my oil/filter at ~2,000 miles and then at 5,000 miles and every 5,000 there after. O-Yes I changed to Mobil 1 at the 2,000 mile first change. Car at 82,000 miles now and very excellent in all ways. UOA on Subarus indicate that full breakin occures ~ 5,000 miles eddie
