I think to properly answer this question, we need to know your mechanical abilities and what you want to use the car for. A WRX swap seems to be a great option, easy upgrades, reliable and once it's in it's reliable.

As for the tranny, don't get a super strong clutch, that will help. The clutch is cheaper to replace. If you are looking for big 400+ hp, then an STI tranny will be needed for sure.

Me, I'm on a budget I already had everything but a strong block so I got the ej20g block (got it for $75) and bolted it up to my current 2.2 heads. The heads were rebuilt and had some reground cams in it. All up the whole thing cost me under $400 for the head work, reground cams, gaskets, wrx intercooler, rs clutch, etc...

The only thing I would do different now is using the 2.2 block and just using ej22 turbo pistons and rings. In fact I will probably do that in a year or 2 when/if this engine gets tired.

I don't want to have to mess with it in the mean time though, I want to be able to focus on track days, suspension work and 'gasp' enjoying driving the car. To be honest I drive the piss out of that car, but yet I'm gentle... I don't pound the breaks and I don't redline it, yet I drive it in dirt, I pull my motorcycle and trailer with it, I track the car, I canyon run the car, etc...
