I've looked through the diagrams, and it looks like the two connectors are physically the same but the drawings aren't alway right. I'll feel better when I see the RS connectors in person. I'm not afraid to splice wires, my concern is more along the lines of injecting errors needlessly.
I thought I had read most detailed threads but I never saw anyone say they cut and spliced around the SMJ. Maybe I'm reading too fast.
