BORLA exhaust header that would fit my car - $390. I might be able to do that if I buy my wife some shoes & chocolate. Would this change much if I didn't also get a cat-back and a tune?

Good headers will increase hp, tq, and mpg but unequal length headers are not good headers. They do sound amazing though. You would need no other mods with the borlas.

If you want to spend money making your car accelerate faster, go buy a faster car. You could go buy a used wrx for the same money you will spend modifying to a level that you can feel gains. The WRX will be MUCH, MUCH faster.

If you want to drive the car faster, you should tweak the handling instead as you are starting on equal footing with the faster cars. In your price range I would start with a good set of swaybars and endlinks. That or a good set of wheels and tires.
