Seeing I was going to be that far into the engine, I decided to replace all (4) of the intake HLA's, which upon disassembly the second time around, I found all (4) to be compressable. The exhaust HLA's were solid and could not be compressed. After the repair, the noise remains. The (4) new parts came directly from Subaru. They primed fine before I installed them and were holding pressure on my work bench. Is it possible the exhaust HLA's are bad, even though they were firm when I took the engine apart? I was thinking of maybe swapping the intakes for the exhausts and seeing if that makes any difference.

The engine runs great and has power, so I feel the valves are opening and closing fine. I read somewhere there may be a blockage in the port that feeds oil to the HLA's. If this port were blocked, wouldn't the exhaust units be compressable, as well, if they weren't getting any oil?

Engine has 119,000 miles on it. I've owned the car since 87,000 miles and change the oil and filter every 5k. Any thoughts or ideas on this? I'm all ears. Thanks!
I have a similar issue with my 98 L with the 2.2 from my 96 imp wagon. It has hla's and at least 1 or two on the driver's side head cylinder 4 has some problems.... The heads were rebuilt last year and the hla's were good then. Just showed up a bit ago with the really cold weather here...

I will be taking the driver's side rocker assembly off to see what is going on.

What oil have you been using? Were the small orange o-rings replaced on the hla's you replaced?
