I put a little bit of grease on the splines and make sure theres no rust on the input shaft. keep it in gear, raise the trans, put a wrench of the crank pulley bolt and move it around and it usually slides in. Its not easy if you're doing this by yourself...sounds like you are. keep the faith, it'll go.
