They wouldn't be if the only the shaft itself is thicker.. the spline area is likely the same count and diameter as the original.
On axle shafts inside a straight axle, having one area thicker than another actually puts more stresses on the thinner area, making the shaft weaker overall. (Known as "necked down shafts")
