On my '97 Outback Sport that I bought new and drove to 350K before trade in, I pretty much did the routine maintenance, I went synthetic oil at the 2nd oil change (this may or may not do anything, depending on where you fall in the synthetic/dino oil debate) and washed the car every 2 weeks, at a minimum.

Take care of the little problems fast, before they become big problems, and find an independent mechanic that you trust to tell you when stuff needs to be replaced or fixed, and when it doesn't, even though the manual may tell you it does.

It was a resilient car, to say the least, because I was a less than stellar driver during the 13 years that I owned it.
